Star Trek Meets Game Of Thrones In Massive New Space Opera

With extensive experience playing video games, he covers all forms of gaming content at Screen Rant, from breaking news to the latest fan theories. Most-played games range from Clair Obscur to Civ to Elden Ring to Halo 2 and beyond.

It's an exciting time to be a Star Trek enthusiast, with the franchise's 60th anniversary being absolutely stacked with huge announcements in the gaming space in particular. For starters, Star Trek Online is celebrating with the ambitious Rediscovered update, marking its 37th season and bringing multiple eras of Spock together while laying out a roadmap of additional content extending into 2027.

Meanwhile, Bloober Team is taking the franchise somewhere radically different with Star Trek: Shadow Frontier, an upcoming survival-horror game starring Michelle Forbes as Ro Laren. Further, Magic: The Gathering is getting an expansive Star Trek crossover covering characters, ships, and stories from across the franchise's history, while Star Trek: Voyager – Across the Unknown is expanding through The Q Trials, a free new mode featuring the return of John de Lancie's Q.

However, if those official announcements weren't enough for you, there's a promising new space opera coming soon to Steam that Star Trek fans will not want to skip, with the political intrigue and scheming plots you might find in the likes of Game of Thrones or Dune.

If You Love Star Trek, Game Of Thrones, Or The Expanse, Wishlist This Space Opera Now

Falling Frontier cinematic image

Falling Frontier is an ambitious sci-fi RTS from Australian developer Stutter Fox Studios and publisher Hooded Horse, built around conquering a massive procedurally generated star system. Players will balance warfare with exploration, gathering intelligence, and logistics, establishing shipyards, refineries, supply depots, and recon stations while researching new technology and designing specialized warships.

More than 20 ship types are planned, while individual officers have their own identities, traits, and abilities. Combat is similarly nuanced, with individual ship systems that can be damaged, smaller vessels that can overcome larger opponents if players use the right tactics, and players can hide fleets behind moons, disguise heat signatures near gas giants, ambush enemies, blockade colonies, or cripple opponents by attacking their supply chains. Captured enemy officers can even be interrogated for intelligence, "or left in their escape pods as bait in order to ambush any rescue ships."

Falling Frontier Launches In Early Access Soon

Falling Frontier has shades of several massive sci-fi franchises, with relatively grounded spaceships, logistics, and interplanetary human conflict immediately evoking The Expanse, while its exploration elements, fleet command, and specialized crews should appeal to Star Trek fans as well.

Competition between rival human factions and lineages gives it some of the strategic power-struggle appeal of Game of Thrones and Dune, albeit without their character-driven court politics. Further, the game's enormous warships, brutal and epic battles, and the game's darker military edge give it a touch of Warhammer 40K, if that's something you're into.

Falling Frontier is expected to enter Early Access as soon as 2026, although Steam currently lists the release simply as "Coming soon," meaning an exact launch date has yet to be confirmed. Stutter Fox originally pushed back the game's release after an expected 2025 EA launch, promising a 2026 Early Access release, though that timeline has become a bit more uncertain since last year. Still, this massive space opera is well worth wishlisting on Steam now to get the most up-to-date info on its launch as possible.
