Indonesia's lawmaker urges palm oil exporters to secure local supply

Semarang (ANTARA) - Deputy Chair of House Commission VII Evita Nursanty has urged palm oil exporters to prioritize domestic cooking oil demand before focusing on overseas markets.

“Let us not allow cooking oil shortages to occur. The industry has a responsibility to meet domestic needs,” Nursanty said during a Commission VII visit to PT Berkah Emas Sumber Terang (BEST) in Semarang on Friday.

She said palm oil processing and downstream industries play a strategic role in Indonesia’s economy.

“The challenge is how to transform this advantage into added value,” she said.

Nursanty welcomed the development of downstream palm oil industries, which has increased exports of processed palm oil products.

“We have the capacity to produce value-added products and penetrate international markets,” she added.

She urged the industry to fulfill domestic demand before prioritizing exports.

Nursanty said Central Java’s cooking oil consumption reached 566 tons per day.

“Demand in Central Java is quite high, and we must not allow shortages to occur,” she said.

Meanwhile, Industry Ministry Expert Staff for the Acceleration of Industry 4.0 Transformation Andi Rizaldi said Indonesia produced 24.45 million kiloliters of palm-based cooking oil in 2025.

National demand stood at 5.9 million kiloliters, or about 25 percent of total production, he said.

Indonesia’s palm oil product exports reached 14.24 million kiloliters in 2025.
