PCG suspends small vessel trips in northern Quezon due to Rosal

LUCENA CITY, Quezon — The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) suspended small-vessel operations in northern Quezon on Wednesday afternoon, Oct. 21, as rough seas generated by Super Typhoon Rosal threatened sea travel.
In a public advisory, the PCG station in Real, Quezon, cited the 5 p.m. weather bulletin issued by the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa), which warned that strong to gale-force winds were expected to affect the northern and eastern coasts of Polillo Island, including the northern coasts of Panukulan and Burdeos and the eastern coasts of Patnanungan and Jomalig.
Polillo Island, which lies off Lamon Bay and faces the Pacific Ocean, is home to the municipalities of Polillo, Burdeos and Panukulan in northern Quezon province.

“In this regard, all trips of vessels and small crafts with 250 gross tonnages and below plying the route within the abovementioned areas of northern Quezon are hereby temporarily suspended,” the PCG said.
The suspension will remain in effect until weather and sea conditions improve and authorities determine that it is safe to resume operations.
In its latest bulletin, Pagasa reported that the center of Rosal was located 725 kilometers (450 miles) east of Aparri as of 4 p.m.
Rosal had maximum sustained winds of 205 kph (127 mph) near its center and gusts of up to 250 kph (155 mph). Strong to typhoon-force winds extended up to 780 kilometers (485 miles) from the center.
Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 2, which indicates the threat of gale-force winds, remained in effect over Batanes. /das
