Coast Guard evacuates residents in Occidental Mindoro towns due to rains

CALAPAN CITY, Oriental Mindoro — The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) enforced pre-emptive evacuations in the Occidental Mindoro towns of Paluan and Sablayan on Aug. 18 as heavy rains brought by the southwest monsoon raised water levels in flood-prone areas.
In Paluan, residents from low-lying and flood-prone areas in Barangays 1, 6 and 10 were moved to safety by the Coast Guard Sub-Station (CGSS) Paluan, together with the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO), the Bureau of Fire Protection and the Municipal Police Station.
The operation was launched after the CGSS Paluan received a report from the MDRRMO about continuously rising water levels in these communities.

Meanwhile, in Sablayan, CGSS Sablayan personnel evacuated 11 families, or 16 individuals, from Barangay Ilvita in a pre-emptive operation that started at around 4 a.m. on Aug. 18.
The rescue team responded after receiving a report from the barangay chairperson about families who needed to move to a safer location.
The evacuees were brought to the Ilvita National High School–Victoria Annex, which serves as the official evacuation center.
Among those evacuated were two senior citizens—a man and a woman—a woman with disability and two infants, a boy and a girl. The group also included five boys and six adults, comprising two men and four women. INQ
