Who is lawyer Theodore Te?

MANILA, Philippines — Lawyer Theodore Te is among the lawyers assisting the House prosecution panel in the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte.

Te is the interim chairperson of the Free Legal Assistance Group (Flag), described as the oldest network of human rights lawyers in the Philippines, and a full time faculty member of the University of the Philippines, where he holds the rank of assistant professor.

He previously served as chief public information officer and spokesperson of the Supreme Court.

Te has litigated before all levels of Philippine courts, handling cases involving the death penalty, anti-terrorism and other legal issues. He also represents journalists facing libel and cyberlibel cases and conducts training for journalists and nongovernmental organizations on nuisance suits and red-tagging.

His legal practice and advocacy include criminal law, civil and criminal procedure, labor law, evidence, special proceedings, and human rights remedies such as amparo, habeas data and habeas corpus.

Te has also advocated for the abolition of the death penalty and criminal libel, as well as press freedom and civil and political rights.

Te earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology and Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of the Philippines. He also earned a Master of Laws degree from Columbia University in New York City.

He has served as a Bar examiner for criminal law in 2014, labor law in 2015, and procedure in 2021 and 2022./dp
