The Pitt won Outstanding Drama Series at the 78th Emmy Awards on Monday. Showrunner R. Scott Gemmill accepted the award for the show with about two dozen cast members behind him.

During his speech, Gemmill paid tribute to the “real-life heroes” in the emergency department. “We just want to shine a light on them,” he said. “Yes, their stories can be frustrating and heartbreaking, but they also can be so inspirational and healing.”

He also spoke to the power of what he believes is authentic storytelling in a time when people are doubting the news. “It is so hard to tell what is real and what we can believe anymore, which makes telling honest stories about real human struggles so much more important than ever,” he said. “What you do, it changes people’s lives.”

The Pitt was nominated against The Diplomat, Paradise, Pluribus, Slow Horses, Your Friends & Neighbors, The Gilded Age, and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. The Pitt also took home the Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series last year.

The Pitt follows a group of doctors in a teaching hospital’s emergency room, and each episode roughly tracks one hour of their shift, all while illuminating the American healthcare system’s shortfalls. While Season One was already nail-biting, the second season dialed up the chaos (and tears), by tackling ICE, unassisted pregnancies, sexual assault, and addiction.

This season of The Pitt was nominated for a whopping 25 awards across major and creative categories. They chiefly included acting nods for its ensemble cast but only Noah Wylie won an award for acting, in the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series category. Last week during the Creative Arts ceremony, Ernest Harden Jr. won the Emmy for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series for his performance as patient Louie Cloverfield. At last year’s Emmys, the first season of The Pitt won three major awards, including Outstanding Drama Series, Best Lead Actor for Noah Wyle, and Best Supporting Actress for Katherine LaNasa.

The Mariska Hargitay-hosted Emmys aired live at NBC/Peacock from the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. See the 2026 Emmys complete winners list.
