Wet, rainy Sunday in parts of Luzon, Visayas due to ‘habagat’ – Pagasa

MANILA, Philippines — Heavy rains due to the enhanced southwest monsoon or “habagat” will continue hounding Luzon and parts of the Visayas on Sunday, according to the state weather bureau.

In a weather advisory issued at 5 p.m., the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) reported that monsoon rains of up to 200 millimeters (mm) may prevail over the following areas on Sunday:

• Metro Manila
• Ilocos Sur 
• La Union
• Benguet
• Pangasinan
• Tarlac
• Zambales
• Pampanga
• Bulacan
• Bataan
• Rizal
• Cavite

Meanwhile, rains of up to 100 mm may also prevail over the areas as follows:

• Ilocos Norte
• Apayao
• Abra
• Kalinga
• Mountain Province
• Ifugao
• Nueva Vizcaya
• Nueva Ecija
• Laguna
• Batangas
• Occidental Mindoro
• Oriental Mindoro

The weather bureau also reported that cloudy skies with scattered rain showers may also affect the rest of Luzon, Western Visayas, and Negros Island Region also due to the habagat.

Pagasa weather specialist Daniel Villamil said that the effects of the southwest monsoon will persist in the next few days due to the low-pressure areas (LPAs) outside the Philippine area of responsibility.

“Isa sa mga reason kung bakit tuloy tuloy ang epekto ng habagat sa mga susunod na raw ay dahil dito sa dalawang low-pressure area na ating mino-monitor sa labas ng Philippine area of responsibility,” he explained.

(One of the reasons why the effects of the southwest monsoon will persist in the coming days is due to the two low-pressure areas we are monitoring outside the Philippine area of rresponsibility.)

He said that the LPA, located some 1,545 kilometers (km) east of extreme Northern Luzon, has a high chance of developing into a tropical depression within the next 24 hours and may enhance the habagat as it approaches the country.

The second LPA was estimated some 640 kms. north-northeast of Itbayat, Batanes, as of 3 p.m.

“So possible, over the weekend hanggang sa araw ng Lunes, malalakas pa rin ang pag ulan for Metro Manila and most of Central Luzon and portions of Southern Luzon,” he said.

(So, it is possible that heavy rains will persist over the weekend and until Monday in Metro Manila, most of Central Luzon, and parts of Southern Luzon.) /gsg
