LUCENA CITY — The Pamitinan Protected Landscape (PPL) in Montalban, Rizal remains temporarily closed to visitors as authorities conduct cleanup, repairs and safety assessments.

This site is a popular destination for rock climbers and outdoor enthusiasts.

The closure comes following the discovery of cracks at its summit.

It said the Protected Area Management Office (PAMO) is still in the middle of cleanup operations, road repairs and campsite maintenance.

“Considering that PPL is a rockslide-prone area, further assessment and the implementation of necessary safety measures are currently being undertaken to ensure the safety of visitors, tour guides and personnel,” the DENR explained.

Authorities urged the public to refrain from entering the protected area or conducting tourism activities there until further notice.

The DENR said the public will be informed once the area has been declared safe and cleared for reopening.

The 608-hectare protected landscape encompasses the Montalban Gorge, Wawa Dam, the Upper Marikina River, Mount Pamitinan, Mount Binacayan and Pamitinan Cave.

Mount Pamitinan is a favored rock climbing destination because of its jagged limestone formations and scenic views from the summit.

Wawa Dam is also a popular site for swimming and picnics, while Pamitinan Cave is known for its historical association with the Katipunan.

Historical accounts say Andres Bonifacio and other Katipuneros used the cave as a hideout, while local tradition associates the area with the legendary figure Bernardo Carpio. /apl
