Mark Chapman and Rachin Ravindra have been ruled out of the five-match ODI series against India. An MRI scan showed that Chapman's left hamstring required another two weeks of rehabilitation while Ravindra's right shoulder needed more time before he can field at full capacity.
"Everyone knows what an asset Mark and Rachin are to this side so it's a shame they have to miss this series," New Zealand head coach Rob Walter said. "I caught up with Mark last week and although he's disappointed he's working hard to get back on the field.
"With Rachin, his shoulder hasn't quite recovered to a position where he could field comfortably in white-ball cricket, so with the Test series later this month we don't want to take any undue risks."
Ravindra had injured his shoulder during a promo shoot while Chapman had suffered a hamstring tear at the European T20 Premier League, both in September.
Nicholls' recall is timely as he made 119 while opening the batting for Canterbury in the Ford Trophy on Saturday. He is capped 92 times in ODIs, having been part of New Zealand's tour to West Indies in July.
Matt Henry, who was ruled out midway through the T20I series against India, joined the squad and his readiness to play will be assessed. As a result, Matthew Fisher, who was named only for the last two games originally, has been included for the full series as an additional bowling option.
The first ODI will be played at Eden Park in Auckland on Wednesday (November 4).
